Inspiring Young Learners Through Smart Design

In response to growing enrollment and evolving educational needs, Elizabeth Meyer School in Skokie underwent a transformative expansion in 2017. As part of Phase II, the school added a vibrant new Learning Center, a full-size gymnasium, six modern classrooms, and a dedicated art/music room—delivering dynamic, flexible spaces built for NextGeneration learning.

The expansion also prioritizes student wellness and sustainability. A new energy-efficient geothermal heating and cooling system was installed, alongside a secure storm shelter and a playful new outdoor environment with a redesigned playground.

Phase I of the project, completed in partnership with the Village of Skokie, focused on critical infrastructure improvements, including underground stormwater storage systems that benefit both the school and surrounding neighborhood.

At the heart of the new addition is the Learning Center—a future-ready environment that fosters creativity, collaboration, communication, and critical thinking. Flexible seating and modular shelving make it easy to reconfigure the space for small groups, large gatherings, or individual exploration. Curved and circular layouts echo in both the furniture and ceiling design, creating a cohesive and visually engaging space.

 

Highlights Include:

• Grouping tables that cluster in threes for team-based learning

• A raised platform at the window bay that doubles as a presentation or reading area

• A dedicated technology wall near the circulation desk for interactive instruction

• A maker space puzzle-piece table that accommodates up to eight students

Designed to grow with its youngest learners, the Elizabeth Meyer School expansion delivers a space where imagination thrives and educational possibilities are endless.
