GreenAssociates is a contributing author to the State of Illinois’ School Construction Guide and is leading seminars for Illinois ASBO on facility renovation, remodeling, and sustainable design.

We work with the CDB and State Board of Education on Illinois First construction grant applications and are a part of the Council of Educational Facility Planners International (CEFPI).

This is the planning, selection, procurement, and installation of all furniture and equipment that support teaching, learning, and daily school activities.

Our structured process ensures spaces are functional, flexible, durable, and aligned with educational goals.

1. Identifying Your Goals

Begin by identifying the district’s priorities and goals. Consider whether the focus is on Next Generation furniture and layouts, equity between spaces and buildings, current furniture performance and maintenance, student attendance and engagement, environments that support academic and social-emotional needs, and spaces that foster collaboration and active learning.

2. Furniture Showcase: Display & Test

Showcase a variety of furniture options for staff and students to experience firsthand. Round 1: Use digital surveys to gather and track feedback on the options presented.

3. Prototype Classrooms: Survey

Outfit one classroom per grade level with different furniture configurations for testing, such as a mix of individual and shared tables or chairs with different bases. Allow the classrooms to be used for an appropriate testing period, then conduct Round 2 of digital surveys to determine what is and is not working. Based on the feedback, finalize the furniture selections for the test classrooms.

4. Test Classrooms: Confirm

Expand the selected furniture into a group of classrooms and test the selections over the course of one school year. Round 3: Conduct digital surveys to confirm the final furniture selections and identify any last adjustments.
