GOWER SCHOOL DISTRICT 62
Gower West Elementary School
GOWER, ILLINOIS
A Bold Step Forward: Flexible Learning Spaces for a New Generation.
This two-phase renovation and expansion project was driven by a clear mission: refresh the existing building and introduce dynamic, hands-on exploratory spaces to support student learning for generations to come.
The result delivers on that promise—adding much-needed classrooms, office space, and a flexible, future-ready environment.
Architecturally, the new addition creates a striking contrast. The soaring gymnasium roof rises boldly against the school’s original low-slung horizontal lines, while horizontal brick banding ties the new structure to the familiar tones of the existing façade—honoring the past while embracing the future.
The addition resolves longstanding space limitations and completes the school’s master plan. Strategically located at the open end of the courtyard, the expansion closes the campus loop, dramatically improving circulation, communication, and security throughout the building.
Inside, vibrant colors and abundant natural light set the tone for engaging learning environments. Flexible, moveable furniture allows teachers and students to easily reconfigure classrooms to fit their needs—whether working independently, in small groups, or as a whole class. Soft seating, modular tables, and mobile shelving support a wide range of activities and learning styles.
Former district offices were thoughtfully converted into two additional classrooms, while administrative staff now benefit from a newly relocated and secure suite within the new addition—separate, yet seamlessly connected to the heart of the school.
