Saint John the Baptist

Orthodox Church

An Orthodox Christian community in Los Angeles, Ixcan, Guatemala had been worshiping for years in a small barn.  The community was growing and prayed for a new church to accommodate its faithful. A Greek Orthodox parish over 2,600 miles away in the Chicago area provided funding for the construction materials for the new church.

Construction labor was provided by volunteers from the local community.

The church was designed in a basilica style with a cruciform plan, creating a rich expression of the Church’s liturgical tradition. A dome was erected at the intersection of the cross and is supported by four columns. Each of the four columns represents one of the four Evangelists. The church stands as a testament to the local community that built it with their own hands.

George Prosiliakos visited the substantially completed church in 2018 and participated in the consecration services with the local Metropolitan and visiting clergy.
