Saint John Chrysostomos Monastery
Sleeping Room and Workshop
The new two-story facility features first-floor workshop spaces dedicated to a variety of crafts essential to Orthodox monastic life, including religious iconography, sewing, embroidery, decorative arts, vestment making, and instruction in Byzantine music and art. These workshops help preserve and teach the traditional crafts and artistic practices that are integral to the monastery's spiritual heritage.
The second floor contains 26 sleeping rooms, providing accommodations for the resident sisterhood as well as visiting pilgrims and guests. The building is heated and cooled using a geothermal ground-source heat pump (GSHP) system that utilizes the earth's stable underground temperature, eliminating the need for conventional boilers and chillers.
During the winter, the system extracts heat from the ground to warm the building, while in the summer it transfers heat back into the earth to provide cooling, resulting in significant energy efficiency. GSHP systems can reduce heating and cooling energy consumption by up to 70% compared to traditional HVAC systems.
