OTTAWA ELEMENTARY SCHOOL DISTRICT 141
Central Intermediate School
OTTAWA, ILLINOIS
From disaster to a LEED Silver-certified NextGeneration learning environment.
When flooding in September 2008 condemned Central Intermediate School, the District faced an urgent challenge. GreenAssociates responded immediately—securing temporary classrooms and coordinating the conversion of a shuttered Wal-Mart into an interim school, which opened just one year later.
In 2010, Ottawa voters approved a referendum to rebuild. GreenAssociates partnered with the Administration and community to design a modern replacement that now serves all 5th and 6th grade students.
The new two-story, 20-classroom wing features computer labs, special education spaces, and a dedicated library/media center with an instructional technology lab. Fine arts thrive in a purpose-built art room, while band and chorus benefit from dedicated rehearsal rooms and practice areas.
A two-station gym with seating for 600 and a cafetorium with stage seating over 650 support both school and community events. Designed for sustainability, the building earned LEED Silver certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.
