RONALD W. REAGAN MIDDLE SCHOOL

Dixon School District 170

Faced with aging buildings ill-equipped to deal with a growing student body and increased programmatic issues, a district-wide reorganization was in order.  The construction of a new 7/8 middle school and renovation of the junior high into a 5/6 grade center answered these challenges.

Through three days of intense, on-site collaborations with administration, faculty, students, and community members, programs and design considerations were discussed.

"It was a thrilling process!  The new school's design developed before us the cooperative planning of the new school reflected our philosophy of cooperative learning," said Woody Wasson, principal of the school.

Site constraints and the desire to share resources led to the idea of connecting the new school to the junior high.  This maximized school visibility and surrounding open spaces, and emphasized the schools' joint resources.
