MILLBURN SCHOOL

Community Consolidated School District 24

The design challenge at Millburn School was complex and multi-faceted. The district is rapidly growing yet places a high priority on small class size.

Planning comprised of integrating new and existing components while ensuring that the existing school could remain in operation. The design places a new barrel-vaulted entrance as the physical and visual center of the composite building.  This with the new administrative offices act as a juncture between old and new.  The addition’s exterior incorporates brick and red accents that provide continuity with the existing building.

The barrel vault reappears in the ceiling of the new centrally located Library which has natural light from the adjacent courtyard.

The program doubled the number of classrooms, and added science, band and art facilities.  Kindergarten rooms are on the first floor and each has a large bay window that creates a seating area within the classroom, and enables the younger students to identify their room from the entrance to the site.

As it enters a new era, Millburn School has married the new building to the old, and renewed its mission.
