After years of steady growth and state mandated curriculum changes, McCracken Middle School became overcrowded. To ease the space crunch, the Board of Education and the community agreed to provide students and teachers with much needed additional teaching and learning spaces. Blending seamlessly with the existing school building, the new two story addition began in November 2007 and added three science labs, one general use classroom, a multipurpose room, a technology lab, and a space for the school’s instrumental music program.	Students welcome the new space; they can do their science experiments in real working science labs and practice their instruments in a dedicated acoustically tuned space after years of rehearsing in halls and cafeteria. building from the main entrance.  The addition showcases several “green” design features. Low VOC finishes were used throughout. A living roof was installed over a portion of the building; solar thermal panels and photovoltaic panels were added at different locations on the building. Inside dual setting flush valves were used in all water closets and photovoltaic powered lavatories faucets control the flow of water.
