HENRY WADSWORTH LONGFELLOW SCHOOL

Community Consolidated School District 21

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow School was a 1960s box that had been modified in piece-meal fashion for over 35 years.  As part of a district-wide plan, the school had been scheduled for renovation in order to meet the district's changing needs.

GreenAssociates worked with the district and the school’s staff to help define their needs and to develop a coherent, effective plan as the school district prepared to enter the 21st century.

The existing nondescript entry was relocated to the center of the building, flanked by decorative lighting and marked by a high cupola.  Circulation was simplified and redirected from the learning center's core, which had been very disruptive to the perimeter.  Carpeting patterns define learning areas to further direct circulation.

The original building had a single gymnasium for gym class, lunch, gatherings and team teaching.  A new, divisible multi-purpose room was added with a separate night entrance for use by both the school and the community
